The pen and mouse work fine when navigating through windows and using other applications (like Paint.NET) but whenever a GTK app is started, then input freezes or responds VERY slowly (once every several seconds). If, for some arcane reason, I will need to use the IntuosPro again, I will try the open source drivers I learned about after I switched back to the Intuos4, maybe those will not cause problems with the touch ring and the touch input. My Wacom Bamboo Fun does not function with GTK apps in Windows (tried GIMP and Inkscape). At that point I decided I had had enough, went on eBay and found the offer I told you about, with $50 I got not one but two tablets, I also spent another 60 on a brand new (older model) stylus and a few nibs so that I would have a backup in case they cease production (the stylus is still in its box), with roughly $125 I solved my situation and have a full backup in case the one I'm using bursts in flames, one of the best buys I've ever done and I feel like I've upgraded rather than being stuck with a 12 year old model yes the driver is old - they stopped updating it a couple of years ago - but honestly I don't care, it still works flawlessly, way better than the IntuosPro ever did.

The thing that made me finally pull the trigger on the Intuos4 is that after a couple of years the touch input, which I had always kept disabled, started going crazy, the tablet would start making the big pop up with "Touch input ON/OFF" appear at the center of my main monitor several times in a row, it started doing it occasionally and it ended up being a constant pain, every few minutes it would do it, I tried opening and cleaning it thoroughly and connecting it to a different PC with a few different driver versions, nothing would solve it.

The touch ring problem was mostly fixed after a few driver updates but it would come back on occasion.
